It’s an unwritten rule that in movies, the bad guys lose. It is thought that good always triumphs evil and audiences are meant to root for the heroes.

It’s an unwritten rule that in movies, the bad guys lose. It is thought that good always triumphs evil and audiences are meant to root for the heroes. As such, creators and directors portray the protagonists in ways so as to win the audience’s sympathy. But sometimes, the villains somehow earn the respect and admiration of viewers. This leaves audiences to believe that these villains should actually win. Here are five movie villains that people actually root for. 1. Tony Perkis From Heavyweights In the movie Heavyweights, several overweight children attend a camp to help them lose weight, get healthy and develop better eating habits. Tony Perkins, the camp leader and fitness trainer is the villain in this movie. In trying to carry out his duties and help the children, he became the bad guy. The children went rogue and tortured Perkis. He was imprisoned, starved, insulted and electrocuted all at the hands of the children. Certainly, for trying to do the right thing and help these overweight children become healthy, Perkis should have been seen as the hero.  2. Mr. Freeze From Batman and Robin Dr. Victor Fries, known as Mr. Freeze is the main antagonist in the movie Batman and Robin. We would all go to great lengths to save the ones we love and Mr. Freeze was trying to do just that. He’s cryogenicist who puts his wife Nora in cryogenic stasis until he discovers a treatment for MacGregor’s Syndrome, the terminal illness from which she suffers. He wreaks havoc in the name of love, as he tries to save his beloved. Freeze could have saved his wife and the city would have been secure if Batman provided him access to the cutting-edge technology in the Batcave. 3. Killmonger From Black Panther Killmonger was no saint. He was ruthless and conniving but beneath all that, audiences saw his sympathetic, selfless and righteous side. Some couldn’t help but in some small measure feel empathy for this psychotic villain and his twisted dreams. He grew up in a world that he wanted to help although he lost sight of his motives. He intended to change Wakanda's long-standing policy of isolationism and make their sophisticated technology and medicine available to the less fortunate across the world. Killmonger lost his father and had a tough childhood. He had a rightful claim to the Wakandan throne but it was taken from him, even when he won the fight and the challenge was technically over. 4. Francis Hummel From The Rock The movie itself acknowledged the righteousness of Francis Hummel, the villain. Many of Hummel’s soldiers perished during black missions without their families receiving any compensation. Hummel saw this as injustice and he devised a plan to force the US government to pay the families. No one can deny that Hummel had a point. He kept hostages as a bluff to intimidate the government and he never actually went through with the anticipated attack on San Francisco. He wasn’t as bad as we may want him to seem. 5. The EPA From Ghostbusters In the 1984 movie Ghostbusters, the members of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) were seen as the bad guys. All they tried to do was to regulate the Ghostbusters. Walter Peck, the inspector, wanted to ensure that whatever the Busters did was safe and that proper safety measures were in place. Peck was spot on in all this. The Busters were running home brew reactors which were dangerous and they had the potential to level down a wide cross-section of lower Manhattan. He was only concerned for the public’s safety and rightly so.
