Let’s assume that The Matrix is everywhere, this would mean that there are several characters who aren’t as they appear to be. Are they humans like Neo, Trinity and Morpheus, or are programs such as Agent Smith who are either meant to keep humans clueless and in line. With this in mind, let’s have a look at a couple of characters from various movies who may actually be part of the computer-run world we know as The Matrix.  1. Kevin Flynn (Tron) An obvious contender for this list would be Kevin Flynn from Tron, who, much like Neo and the others, gets sucked into an artificial world. And in Tron: Legacy, it is revealed that the purpose of his hacking program Clu was to create a more perfect world. This was probably the basis for the Machine War in The Matrix with Clu doing whatever he can to eliminate the anomalies and imperfections of the computer world. Even with Clu erased the overall purpose still remained: create a perfect society, eliminate the anomalies, create an army, then invade and conquer the human world. 2. Truman Burbank (The Truman Show) What better way to convince people that they’re not in an artificial world that they need to “wake up” from? Simple, you use a program (Ed Harris’ Christof), have it create a Matrix within a Matrix, then raise a child in this “artificial” environment for the rest of humanity’s enjoyment, thus convincing them that this could never be their reality. Truman eventually realizes what’s really going on, with Christof making it extremely hard for him not to leave, but when he does, he “wakes up in the pod” and sets out to awaken the others. 3. J (Men In Black) So going off solely on their appearance, it’s clear that the Men In Black are either agents or agent-like programs. The most probable theory is that J was already a program, he just had no idea what he truly was. Also, his real purpose was to study human behavior while believing that he really was one of them. Agents like J protect The Matrix from viruses and bugs inserted into the system by the human resistance in order to wake up the rest of the living population. So they get rid of the anomalies and wipe the minds of any human witnesses. 4. Sarah Connor (Terminator) Like Neo, John Connor is a major threat to the Machine War as he is the captain of the resistance and someone who was trained from birth to free minds and fight machines. In order to ensure a clean victory in the upcoming war, the Machines sent a Terminator back in time to destroy Sarah Connor and weaken the initial resistance. They also started a series of events that will ensure John Connor is eliminated, thus protecting a future in which The Matrix will still exist. 5. Indiana Jones Indiana Jones seems to be one of those characters who always land safely on their feet and survive situations that would otherwise hurt regular people. Given this, there’s a good chance that he is actually a program with a well-defined mission which is to protect the “save points” of the Matrix. These save points manifest in the form of physical objects and are quite valuable. Therefore they are kept hidden from not only humans but also programs as well. This is why we see Indiana Jones being chased by agents in the form of Soviets who are hellbent on keeping that power to themselves.
