Video games have also been subject to their own share of urban legends, some of which are humorous, strange, or creepy. Here are some bizarre video game urban legends. 1. The Madden Curse In 1998, Electronic Arts (EA) changed the cover image of its Madden NFL games from John Madden to professional football players. The first player to grace the cover was Garrison Hearst, who had just broken the record for total yards in a season. However, the next season he suffered a devastating ankle injury. The Madden Curse continued when Barry Sanders, who was on the cover of Madden NFL 2000, announced his retirement before even playing a single game. To avoid having a retired player on the cover, EA re-released the game with Dorsey Levens, who then suffered a knee injury that ruined his career. Out of the 22 players featured on the cover over the past 20 years, 16 had troubled or shortened seasons after their image was used. The Madden Curse remains an urban legend, but a strange one. 2. Brutus the Bulldog in Animal Crossing The myth of "Brutus the Bulldog" is a popular legend in the world of Animal Crossing. Despite the charming reputation of the Nintendo franchise, it is not immune to video game myths. Following the release of the game, rumors circulated about a cruel character named "Brutus," who would move into the player's village at night if they were away for too long. The legend claimed that Brutus would cause chaos and result in the game crashing. This story, however, is completely false and holds no truth. Yet, it is interesting to note that Animal Crossing has multiple urban legends, which is unusual for a single video game. 3. Halo's Unknown Ghosts The legend of the "Unknown Ghosts" in the Halo 2, Halo 3, and Halo: Reach videogames states that players encounter random characters appearing out of nowhere during gameplay. These characters are not part of the storyline and cannot be killed, and when they score a kill, the credit goes to "The Guardians." But who are these "Unknown Ghosts?" The truth is they are just a result of network lag or map overload glitches, as explained by the developers. This phenomenon was unsettling because no one wants to play a game that's already lost from the start. 4. Sony Receives Note From the Grave The story of "Harbor City" is a mysterious urban legend surrounding the development of a game by Sony. In 2003, Sony aimed to create a follow-up for Twisted Metal and named it Harbor City. Despite completing four levels, the project was abruptly canceled with the claim that six members of the development team had died in a plane crash. This claim, however, could not be verified. In 2007, Sony reported receiving a note from the six deceased team members requesting the release of the four completed levels to the public. This unsettling urban legend continues to fuel speculation and conspiracy theories. 5. Bigfoot: The Stubborn Legend The legend of Bigfoot persists. It started as a physical presence, but now it has made its way into the world of video games. The first recorded sighting of Bigfoot was in the late 19th century in California, where a newspaper reported large human-like footprints. For over a century, Bigfoot has captured the imagination of the American public. Video game players are now also wary of Bigfoot, as reports of sightings in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas sparked a wildfire on social media.
