Hiding items behind walls of sheetrock or bricks is a practice that dates back to centuries. Often, these items have been revealed when homeowners tear down those walls to make home improvements. What they discover hidden in their walls is sometimes insignificant but in some cases their new finds are shocking. Here are five things found within the walls of people’s homes that will surprise you. What’s behind your walls? 1. 100,000 Bees Chantelle Ryan, a Canadian, was a proud new owner of an old Victorian style house which she purchased in a part of town known for its rich history. She made a scary discovery when she heard a persistent buzzing coming from her walls. She found a nest of over 100,000 bees living inside the walls of her home. A local beekeeper provided assistance in removing the bees and extracting 250 pounds of honeycomb. It is believed that the colony of bees were there for about a decade. Ryan definitely had honey to share with her neighbors.    2. Stolen Painting Gustav Klimit painted a piece called “Portrait of a Lady” in about 1917. From 1925, the painting formed part of a collection kept at Galleria Ricci-Oddi in Piacenza, Italy. The painting was stolen in 1997 and for twenty-three years, it was thought that the painting and a piece of history was gone forever.  In 2019, the lost painting was discovered in a bag in the exterior wall of a home. The painting was returned to the museum and it is available for viewing once again. There have been no answers to the lingering question of how the painting got there and who was responsible. 3. Surveillance Equipment It is creepy to be watched, especially in the privacy of one’s own home. A couple from Arizona found a mirror in their bathroom that they felt didn’t belong there. They proceeded to remove it but it was permanently attached to the wall. The homeowners therefore cut the wall and to their surprise, they found that it was actually a two-way mirror and that there were connections for camera equipment installed in the wall behind it. They never found out who was responsible for this. 4. A Stash of Money The thought of buried treasure is one that many people find intriguing. While there are downsides to buying an old house, this Arizona couple definitely won the jackpot. They purchased the old house with the intention to renovate. An employee found hidden in the walls, ammunition cans with half a million dollars in them. The employee told the contractor who decided to keep the money. The employee told the homeowners and the money was taken by the police. The contractor sued the homeowners, the homeowners sued the contractor and the previous owner’s daughter sued the homeowners. It seemed like no one wanted to give up such a large amount of money. The court ruled that the money belonged to the new homeowners. 5. Superman’s First Appearance In 2013, David Gonzalez of Minnesota purchased an abandoned home for 10,100. This house was a fixer upper and Gonzalez was up for the challenge. Within the walls that were insulated with old newspaper, he found the Holy Grail of comic books- a copy of Action Comics #1. This 1938 comic book was Superman’s debut. The book was in a terrible condition, receiving a 1.5 out of 10 grade. It was auctioned and Gonzalez got more than ten times what he paid for the house from the sale of the comic book.
