If you turn on the news you’re most likely bombarded with the numerous threats to humanity. We are constantly waiting for the next shoe to drop and many of us are on the edge of our seats waiting for that day when the world would come to an end. While this may sound like the plot of a sci-fi movie with a cataclysmic end where we cease to exist, these are quite possible. The good news is that scientists believe that the world will be habitable for a few more million years. So here are some of the crazy ways that the world could possibly end. 1. Super-diseases Natural selection has afforded us many benefits, but has also led to major threats to humanity. Diseases are often caused by bacteria and viruses and we see evidence of survival of the fittest among our microscopic foes. When bacteria are first exposed to an antibiotic, those that are most vulnerable to the antibiotic will quickly die, leaving any remaining bacteria to pass on their resistant traits to subsequent generations. The bacteria develop antibiotic resistance. What if the bacteria continue to evolve and become resistant to more and more antibiotics? There can become strains that no medicine can fight off, leaving us at the mercy of these tiny assassinators. 2. Gulf Stream Shutdown  Warm water from the Gulf of Mexico is transported into the Atlantic Ocean by powerful ocean current known as the Gulf Stream. The Gulf Stream extends towards Europe and warms western and northern Europe. Over the years, global warming has caused the ice caps to melt into the Gulf Stream. Scientists have noted that this is causing the Gulf Stream to slow down and have warned that the collapse of the Gulf Stream can be catastrophic. This would cause massive storms, further rise in sea levels, mass food shortages and countries like Europe to become colder. 3. Supervolcanoes and Supereruptions There are currently seven supervolcanoes in the world and they could cause a major disaster at any time. A supervolcano is a volcano that has experienced an eruption with the Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) of eight, which is the biggest recorded value. These eruptions are thousands of times more powerful and violent than typical eruptions so you can well imagine the destruction that can be caused. Civilization would be buried under layers of magma, lava and dust clouds. With such large deposits into the sea, megatsunamis aren’t far fetched. 4. Geomagnetic Reversal A geomagnetic reversal is a shift in a planet's magnetic field where magnetic north and magnetic south switch locations. It is believed that this occurs about every 10,000 years. The magnetic field is significantly weaker during a reversal, which increases the amount of cosmic rays that reach the planet's surface. This can be harmful to life on Earth. While this may not affect us directly, think about its effect on technology. The technology on which our civilization is based could stop working if the energy and communications grids are damaged or disrupted. Just think of all the technology on which our lives depend. 5. Star Death                                    Astronomers believe that the sun will eventually die when it exhausts its store of nuclear fuel. Although scientists are of the opinion that this will happen in a few billion years, this phenomena may happen sooner. When this happens, life on Earth will cease to exist and there’s nothing we can do about it. Even before that day comes, temperatures will rise and oceans will boil over. The planet will be inhabitable at that point.   &nbsp;
