Oftentimes, it’s the practical effects and stunts that everyone thinks that just has to be fake. This list is the complete opposite—here, we are taking a look at effects that were so good that it never crossed your mind that they were, in fact, the works of computer generated images. Think you can always tell when CGI was incorporated in a movie scene? If not, then prepare to have your mind blown by this list below. 1. Mad Max: Fury Road Mad Max: Fury Road is well-known for its wide use of practical effects. So much so that the CGI ones often fly right over our heads. One such scene is when Max teamed up with Furiosa and the Wives aboard the War Rig. As they’re being chased, Furiosa can be seen speeding towards a narrow canyon that gets blocked after a biker gang detonates the rock walls. Turns out that the canyon itself was real, but much larger in real life. Director George Miller had it altered because he wanted it to be taller and narrower to make for a more thrilling and heart-racing scene. 2. Blood Diamond Towards the end of Blood Diamond, when Leonardo DiCaprio’s character is fatally wounded, he is seen making a final phone call to Jennifer Connelly’s character. The two obviously have a gut-wrenching moment that is made even more clear by the single tear that falls down Connelly’s cheek. Apparently this was added digitally during post-production as Director Edward Zwick felt that Connelly’s already superb acting wasn’t enough. It was such a minor detail that went right over most people’ heads, most likely because of the tears welling up in their eyes. 3. Zodiac Director David Fincher has a long reputation in the film industry as being a huge perfectionist who will do whatever he has to make sure his art turns out exactly as he wants it. This includes taking multiple shots of a single scene and using CGI on the most mundane things. Such was the case for a scene in Zodiac, where Mark Ruffalo’s character is investigating a quiet, suburban San Francisco neighborhood. The real location wasn’t enough for Fincher so he had it digitally rendered so that he could have greater control of the lighting, among other things. 4. Brokeback Mountain Brokeback Mountain is not the sort of film you’d expect to have digitally altered scenes. But director Ang Lee felt that it was a necessary decision as the sheep weren’t exactly complying as he’d hoped. At one point, he tried getting them to drink from running water but was forced to give up after they became unruly. So he resorted to using CGI to create the flock of sheep that he wanted. The same goes for much of the mountains, clouds and clumps of trees. 5. The Wolf of Wall Street For a non-action, non-sci-fi movie, The Wolf of Wall Street was packed with a whole lot of CGI, which added to the grandness of the film. Let’s see, there’s surrounding houses on the waterfront which were altered to make Jordan Belfort’s palace truly stand out. There’s also this scene set in Italy where Margot Robbie’s character walks down the dock with the crystal clear waters and sky in the background. Nope, that’s just the magic of green screen. What about the lion casually walking past busy brokers making important calls. In reality, the lion was walking with his trainer, who was then removed and later digitally replaced by the brokers.
