The animal kingdom is truly amazing. Mother nature has gifted certain animals with unique abilities that us humans can only dream of. Some can run on water while others are able to detect electrical signals using nothing but their noses. And if you’re not careful, one just might spray you with a toxic liquid. Maybe it’s a good thing we don’t possess these abilities; after all, we can be quite self-destructive. It’s why we’re now about to look at some of the animal organs rumored to have superpowers. 1. Owl Wings Ninjas and stealth jets have nothing on owls. They are masters of stealth, an ability which allows them to snatch their prey without ever making their presence known. This is due to their wings, which are large and broad, allowing them to cover a large surface area so they don’t have to flap them very often. Their serrated feathers also contribute to noiseless flight by breaking down turbulence. There’s also the fact that the edges of those feathers muffle the sound of air, reducing the noise around them even further. 2. Bombardier Beetle’s Gland Bombardier beetles don’t go easy on their enemies when it comes to defending themselves. When threatened, these insects will spray a scalding, corrosive liquid straight into the face of whoever or whatever’s bugging it. This fluid is known as benzoquinone, which is made in the bug’s behind by mixing two special liquids together. Once expelled, the chamber containing the liquid is shut off from the compartment that created the liquid, so that the chamber walls have enough time to cool off before needing to spray again. 3. Platypus Snout Platypuses aren’t just weird-looking beaver-duck hybrid aquamarine mammals that can lay eggs. Their quirkiness goes way beyond their physical features; they can also detect any living being using only their bills. Just about every living organism has electricity running through the body and platypuses can sense this thanks to the striped pattern on the snout which sends out electrical signals to detect the electricity in nearby organisms. This is known as electroreception and mechanoreception and it allows platypuses to pick up on any signal, even in dark, cold water.  4. Green Basilisk Feet This one right here isn’t nicknamed the “Jesus Christ lizard” for no reason. The green basilisk isn’t afraid to get its feet wet. And it certainly won’t let a body of water stop it from getting to its destination. That’s right, the green basilisk doesn’t just walk on water, it runs straight across it too, covering as much as 4.6 meters or 15 feet on average. As the lizard runs, its fringed feet unfurl and trap air inside, thus allowing it to run on water. What a nifty trick to have on hand, don’t you think? 5. Mantis Shrimp Eyes Hands down, the mantis shrimp has the best eyes in the entire animal kingdom. They have between 12 and 21 photoreceptors that pale in comparison to the three photoreceptors that humans possess. This grants the mantis shrimp exceptional eyesight and the ability to see way more than we can. For example, they can see ultraviolet light but they also have a really odd way of distinguishing colors. How and why did the mantis shrimp evolve the way it did? No one knows, and scientists are still baffled to this day.
