Birds are known to be adorable little creatures with charming songs, delicate wings, and soft feathers. They are often seen near to people and engage in the most endearing interactions with them. Don’t be fooled into believing that all birds conform to these preconceived notions. The 1963 thriller, “The Birds,” gave a glimpse into what could happen if birds suddenly attacked a town. It pointed to some realities that we have to face with these feathery species. Here are five birds that unleash mayhem wherever they’re found.  1. Red-billed Quelea The red-billed quelea is a tiny bird with a brown body and scarlet bill that is native to Africa. With a population of 1.5 billion, it is the most prevalent wild bird on the entire planet. Up to thirty million birds can congregate in nomadic super-colonies. These birds are often called a feathered locust because they wreak havoc on agricultural crops such as sorghum, barley, wheat, corn and rice. Annually, Red-billed queleas damage grain harvests to the tune of $70 million and are a threat to our food security. 2. Common Grackle Grackles are widespread across the majority of North America. These sleek, black birds have the appearance of a crow that has had its tail stretched out. They are considered destructive because they travel in large flocks and eat almost everything. They tear into trash bins, steal food outside restaurants, attack people when their nests are being protected and destroy large fields of crops. Common grackles in large groups are referred to as a plague of grackles because of the substantial damage they cause. The grackles' eating and nesting options have expanded as a result of human environmental alterations. 3. American Crow American crows are a challenge for other native species, farmers and persons who live in the city because they are adaptable and aggressive. During the nesting season, the crows eat the eggs and occasionally the young of waterfowl, pheasants, and other birds. These crows are capable of transmitting avian illnesses like the West Nile Virus. They are a major agricultural pest as they damage and eat crops in a short period of time. Crows also have the potential to occasionally injure young or small livestock.  4. Rock Pigeon Rock pigeons are also known as feral pigeons or city pigeons. They can gather in large flocks and cause much destruction. Agriculture suffers tremendously from rock pigeons that irrevocably contaminate grains meant for human consumption. They also spread diseases such as salmonella, cryptococcosis and encephalitis and are also carriers of Newcastle disease and ornithosis. Trichomonas gallinae, which can kill the rare local birds and destroy poultry supplies, is carried by rock pigeons and poses an extinction danger to the Galápagos dove. Rock pigeons also cause problems in the aviation industry. If they get into the engine of a plane, they are sure to take it down. 5. European Starling The European Starling is an invasive species brought into North America from Europe. This species poses a threat to the agricultural sector by harming grain and fruit crops year-round and compromising livestock feed and water sources. Salmonella, blastomycosis, and transmissible gastroenteritis are just a few of the illnesses that European starlings are known to carry and spread to both humans and animals. This species is infamous for its aggressive behavior and competes for nesting sites and food sources. European starlings attack rival species, destroying their nests, and poke holes in their eggs. Additionally, starling nests harm infrastructure by obstructing gutters and drainpipes, posing a fire risk, and causing structural instability.
